Drawing on the concept of the four elements, each one of us bringing balance within an astrological configuration. Musically speaking, the songs performed will be centered in that sense of balance - fire, water, earth & air. It's origins derived from the jazz idiom, America's classical music.

Paul K Ward (piano) is a sought-after accompanist in the Portland area. Paul has combined his love of music with business, education, and travel, having performed in almost every style, throughout the US and Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. As a music producer, he has arranged, orchestrated, and musically directed reviews, shows, and programming presented in Canada, Australia, and the US, some with performers who have become stars of Broadway, film, and television.

George Colligan (drums) is not only one of the great jazz pianists of his generation, but he has earned an international reputation as a multi-instrumentalist (drums, trumpet, organ, keyboards), composer, accompanist, teacher, and bandleader. Winner of the 2015 DownBeat magazine Critics Poll (Keyboard), he had a long association with  jazz legend Jack DeJohnette. He has also toured the U.S. and Canada as a leader with his trio featuring legends Buster Williams and Lenny White. With over 130 albums to date as an accompanist, Colligan has worked with a long list of jazz greats, including John Scofield, Buster Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Chris Botti, and many others. His latest album, “King’s Dream” (PJCE Records 2022) is his 36th as a bandleader. George Colligan is a Full Professor at Portland State University and has toured, recorded and/or performed as a sideman with with Gary Bartz, Benny Golson, & Miguel Zenon among many others.

Tim Gilson (bass) has played with nationally acclaimed artists including Mose Allison, Ritchie Cole, Bud Shank, Herb Ellis, Julian Priester, John Handy, Ernestine Anderson among others. He toured Japan in 1993 with the Mel Brown Quintet. In 1994 he moved to Madison Wisconsin where he served as Principal Bassist with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Assistant Principal for the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Tim returned to Portland in 2002 to direct the Mt Hood Community College String Ensemble and has performed with the Oregon Symphony backing guest artists such as Dee Daniels, Byron Stripling and Herbie Hancock. He has also accompanied several guest artists including Wycliff Gordon, Antonio Hart, and Ingrid Jensen. Tim continues to teach, perform, arrange and conduct as Director of the MHCC Orchestra and Adjunct faculty at PSU. Tim plays regularly with the Mel Brown Trio and the Mel Brown Septet.

John Stowell teaches and performs internationally. He has been an artist-in-residence at schools in Germany, Indonesia, Argentina, the United States and Canada. He served as assistant director and performer at OPB's PDX Jazz Summit in 1991, and since 1995 has been a contributing columnist for a number of magazines, including Down Beat, Guitar Player, Canadian Musician, Soundcheck (Germany), and Guitar Club (Italy). He has worked with David Friesen, Paul Horn, Uwe Kropinski, Dave Liebman, Hiram Mutschler, Gérard Pansanel, Gustavo Assis-Brasil, David Becker, and Nicolao Valiensi among others. Here is a track from the show in a rough mix format. My plan is to get the album mixed in April and then, if all goes well, released in May. Keep eyes peeled for updates. In the meantime enjoy this track featuring John Stowell on guitar, Paul Ward on piano, George Colligan on drums and Tim Gilson on bass. This song was written by Frank Tribble with lyrics by me.
